Recycling Maniacs

In my last article, I pointed out the fact TV show Hoarders and the focus on odd acquisitive actions. In this article I discuss RecycleMania, which sounds a little like a potential result to Hoarders, having a tilt to the opposite end of the psychological range.

RecycleMania is truly a countrywide university affair where institutions compete to see who is able to recycle the most things during a 10-week period of time. To win, contending schools should collect the most recyclables (per capita or total) and generate the least amount of trash.

RecycleMania capitalizes on a quite cherished school custom: beating the jeans off rival institutions in a rival competition (speaking of pants, as of this writing the categories of recyclables contained in the competition have not involve clothes or any other fabrics, but we are sanguine they'll be involved, perhaps next year).

The RecycleMania website explains the concept behind the match this way:

Universities and colleges are tiny cities that squander large amounts of sources and generate very much solid squander. No matter if a school possesses a widespread waste decrease project or is simply getting fundamental recycle gathering off the ground, experience has shown that all schools have possibility to further decrease the amount of sources they consume and dispose of. RecycleMania offers a tool for campus recycling coordinators, college student green groups and service service professionals to interact their campus group in reusing and waste decrease in a fun and safe way.

The event is the invention of Ed Newman (Ohio University) and Stacy Edmonds Wheeler (Miami University), who in 2001 tried to discover a method to increase recycle in campus house and dinning halls. Since that first contest (Miami won it), the match is growing continuously, with involvement almost doubling each year.

In 2010 greater than 600 schools took part in from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Their united efforts netted nearly 85 million pounds of reused materials. This has improved reduce green house gas by 137,500 statistic tons ofcarbon dioxide equality. In real-world terms, this reduction in greenhouse gases is equivalent to the annual pollutants from 23,850 passenger cars; electrical energy use of 15,140 homes; or the burning of 650 railcars’ worth of fossil fuel. This provides the type of truth we love to see!
